Kristen Stewart is returning to supernatural territory with Olivier Assayas.

ARTE France Cinéma has backed Assayas’ next film, Spiritual World, with Stewart leading an ensemble that also includes Vicky Krieps, Niels Schneider, Riley Keough, Wagner Moura and Barbara Sukowa.

The project gives Stewart and Assayas another story built around the unexplained after Personal Shopper, but this is not a sequel.

ARTE describes Spiritual World as a new supernatural and fantastical project in which Stewart plays Ada, a haunted, clairvoyant young woman experiencing mysterious premonitions.

Filming is currently planned for February through April 2027 in France and Germany.

No release date has been announced.

What is Spiritual World about?

Public plot details are still deliberately limited.

According to ARTE France Cinéma, Stewart’s character Ada is a young woman who is both haunted and clairvoyant, and who is affected by mysterious premonitions.

That is the confirmed supernatural hook.

There is not yet enough official material to say:

  • what is haunting Ada;
  • whether the visions are objectively supernatural within the story;
  • whether ghosts physically appear;
  • whether the film is horror, supernatural drama or something more ambiguous;
  • how the other announced characters connect to Ada;
  • what the title Spiritual World means inside the film.

Those gaps should remain gaps until the filmmakers or producers provide more information.

Who is in the cast?

ARTE’s September 27 production announcement lists:

  • Kristen Stewart
  • Vicky Krieps
  • Niels Schneider
  • Riley Keough
  • Wagner Moura
  • Barbara Sukowa

Variety also reported the cast on September 29.

The production is from Curiosa Films, with ARTE France Cinéma joining as a co-producer.

Assayas is directing.

Stewart and Assayas are returning to the supernatural

The obvious comparison is Personal Shopper.

Assayas’ 2016 film starred Stewart as Maureen, an American living in Paris who works for a celebrity while trying to make contact with her dead twin brother.

The film deliberately blurred ghost story, grief drama and psychological uncertainty.

ARTE itself connects Spiritual World with the supernatural and fantastical side of Assayas’ work, specifically placing the new project in the line of Irma Vep and Personal Shopper.

That makes the comparison more than fan speculation.

What it does not mean is that Spiritual World shares a fictional universe with Personal Shopper.

Nothing announced so far establishes a sequel, crossover or returning character.

When does Spiritual World start filming?

The official production plan is February to April 2027.

Shooting is expected to take place in France and Germany.

Production schedules can change, so those dates should be understood as the current plan rather than proof that cameras are already rolling.

As of September 29, 2026, the film is still an upcoming production.

Does Spiritual World have a release date?

No.

Neither ARTE’s official announcement nor the current trade reporting gives the film a theatrical or streaming release date.

There is also no confirmed:

  • festival premiere;
  • distributor release calendar;
  • streaming service;
  • trailer date;
  • rating;
  • runtime.

Any release window beyond the announced 2027 production schedule would currently be speculation.

Is Spiritual World a horror movie?

It is safest to call it a supernatural film for now.

ARTE describes Assayas as returning to the supernatural and fantastical, and Ada is explicitly described as haunted and clairvoyant.

Horror outlets have understandably picked up the project because of those elements and because of the connection to Personal Shopper.

But no primary source reviewed for this article gives Spiritual World a simple, definitive “horror movie” genre label.

Morbid Index is covering it because the confirmed premise deals directly with haunting, clairvoyance and supernatural premonitions.

That is enough to make the project relevant without forcing a narrower genre classification before the film itself is available.

Clairvoyance in Spiritual World is part of the fiction

Ada’s clairvoyance is a character and story element.

It should not be treated as evidence that people can reliably predict future events through paranormal perception.

The interesting question for the film will be how Assayas chooses to frame Ada’s experiences: as literal supernatural knowledge, psychological uncertainty, symbolic imagery or some combination of those approaches.

We do not know that yet.

The production announcement establishes the premise.

It does not establish the rules.

What happens next?

The project now has an unusually strong cast and a confirmed production plan, but it is still early.

The next meaningful updates would be:

  • production beginning in 2027;
  • official first-look material;
  • a sales or distribution deal;
  • a festival announcement;
  • an official teaser or trailer;
  • a confirmed release date.

Until then, the verified status is straightforward:

Kristen Stewart is leading Olivier Assayas’ supernatural Spiritual World, ARTE France Cinéma is backing the film, and shooting is planned for February through April 2027 in France and Germany.
